In Ontario, the practice of commissioning is governed by the COMMISSIONERS FOR TAKING AFFIDAVITS ACT. A commissioner for taking affidavits is a person entitled to take affidavits and administer oaths, declarations, and affirmations in accordance with the Act. A notary is a person who can witness oaths, solemn affirmations, the signing of affidavits or statutory declarations. A notary may also certify documents to be true copies of the original.
